Wood

Wood is one of the four resources in AoE and AoK, as well as Food, Gold and Stone. Wood is used in constructing and repairing buildings, research and in trainng some units (such as ships and siege engines).

Background

Use and importance

Wood is primarily used for buildings, so a player who is booming or rebuilding will need large amounts. It is also a key resource in water maps, as much wood is required to build a navy. Though wood is important early on, in some games it will become the most expendable resource at later stages. Wood is also crucial for building farms, and is usually stockpiled as the player prepares to transition to a farming based economy.

Gathering wood

In AoE wood can only be gathered by cutting down trees, while in AoK it can also be purchased at the Market, along with the other two resources. In a multiplayer game wood may be tributed from another player. When a player is taken out but manages to evacuate with some villagers, they are often most in need of wood to rebuild, so tributing a player in such a prediciament may allow them to make a comeback. In AoE wood is dropped at Town Centers or Storage Pits, while in AoK, it can be dropped at town centers, and Lumber Camps. Some civilizations have gather rate bonuses, while researching certain technologies will increase the gather rate as well.
