Villagers are the vital inhabitants of the ancient world in the Age of Empires series. Civilisations do not have any foundation without their hunting, gathering and farming skills. The entire beginnings and sustenance of empires rely on the efforts of the working class, represented by the humble villager.

All villagers are capable of:

  • Building
  • Chopping wood
  • Farming
  • Hunting animals
  • Foraging
  • Fishing
  • Mining gold
  • Mining stone
  • Repairing buildings and siege weapons
  • Defending themselves

In both AoE and AoK villagers are created at the Town Center (cost: 50 food).

The number of resources a villager can carry vary throughout the game depending on civilisation bonuses and technologies researched, but once the villager's arms are full they will deliver their resource to the nearest drop-off point.

These Stone Age hunter-gatherers wear knee-length skirt-like pants corresponding to the player's colour. Farmers wear straw hats and carry hoes. Woodcutters at first use stone-head axes which are improved through the ages with research and similarly miners use picks. Foragers carry little wicker baskets to collect berries and fishermen catch fish by jabbing at the water with their spears. Hunters hurl their spears at prey and predators but draw out bone clubs when attacked by human enemies. In the Iron Age villagers carry pitchforks when attacking and Jihad can be researched which results in increased attack and HP as well as a bonus against buildings. Siegecraft enables them to destroy walls and towers.

As well as their male counterpart, female villagers were introduced in AoK. They are no different from male villagers except in their graphic - they wear a dress rather than trousers corresponding to the player's colour. Villagers in AoK represent peasants rather than the tribesmen of AoE. They perform tasks much the same as in AoE but use bows and arrows when hunting, use nets for fishing, and defend themselves with small knives.
