The Stone Age is the earliest period in Age of Empires. It corresponds with the Old Stone Age or Palaeolithic in real-life history.

Resources
In the Stone Age you can only increase your food supply by fishing, hunting and gathering berries. You can harvest wood for building and also mine stone and gold, but they do not have any use in this age.
Units
The only units available in the Stone Age are few but they are villagers, fishing boats, trade boats, and clubmen.
Buildings and Technologies
The only buildings available are the town center, granary, storage pit, dock, barracks and houses. You cannot research any technologies during the Stone Age, except for Tool Age.
Relation to Real History
People in the Stone Age, also known as the Old Stone Age or Palaeolithic Age, were limited in technology, and so they had to use a variety of primitive tools to help them live, stone most commonly being used for tool making. Other stones, such as flint, were shaped for uses such as weapons and cutting tools. Other materials, such as wood, bones, and animal skins were widely used too.
Clay and other sediments were used to make pottery, metal technologies only started to appear in the Copper Age, Bronze Age and in the Iron Age.
The Stone Age eventually ended when agriculture started to develop, which would then be known as the Copper Age.
