Screenshot
From GenieWiki
A screenshot (sometimes called a screenie) is an image taken by a computer to record the visible items on the screen. Screenshots can be taken both during play and outside the game. They are useful for demonstrating a scenario (e.g. map design), capturing a record of the achievements screen, displaying a problem in a scenario or program (e.g. AOK Trigger Studio) etc. The print screen key is normally used for taking screenshots, however a different key is used for taking in game screens, which varies from game to game.
How to take a screenshot
In Age of Empires screenshots are taken using the Ctrl+F12 keyboard combination. Screenshots are stored in the Age of Empires folder and named in the format AoE0000 where the four digit number following AoE is assigned based on the lowest available number.
In Age of Empires II a screenshot can be taken any time while running the game by pressing the PRINT SCREEN key. In The Conquerors expansion the ability to take a screenshot of the whole map is introduced with the Ctrl+F12 keys, while pressing the screenshot button produces an audio prompt to let the player know the screenshot has been saved. The player must select a reduction ratio at this time to determine the size of the bitmap image. These are popular for use in instruction maps. In Age of Kings screens are saved to the main AoK folder, however in AoK:TC the 'Screenshots' subfolder is used to store screenshots. Screenshots are named in the format AOK000 in the same manner as described in the last paragraph.
All screenshots taken in the game are stored in raw bitmap format. Because this format is lossless it is advisable to convert the image to .jpg format (or some other lossy format) before posting screenshots online to conserve bandwidth, especially in the case of posting many large images.
