Lag

Lag is the common term for a break in connection between two players in an online game. It is caused by players using internet connection with different speeds, or by too many players attempting to play in the same game.

Detection

Common signs of lag are pauses in the game, units moving at odd speeds, or errors in battle sequences.

Solutions

In games with more than 3 players in Age of Empires, lag can be overcome by having the player with the slowest internet connection host the game. This works because the game engine attempts to play at the speed of the host. If the host's speed is faster than that of other players, they can't keep up, and lag occurs.
