History

In Greek mythology, Hector ( Ἑκτωρ, "holding fast"), or Hektor, was a Trojan prince and one of the greatest fighters in the Trojan War, equal to Ajax and surpassed only by Achilles. The firstborn son of King Priam, Hector is the leader of the Trojan and allied armies and heir apparent to the throne of Troy. He had a wife, Andromache and son named Astyanax, while his brother was Paris, whose abduction of Helen was the cause of the Trojan War. Known as the "breaker of horses," he is depicted in AoE on his horse Lampos.

Hector represents Troy and what it stood for. Some modern scholars have even suggested that he, not Achilles, is the true hero of the Iliad. Hector was fighting not for personal glory, but in defense of his homeland.

Achilles, enraged over the death of his long time best friend Patroclus, challenges Hector, and in a long fight Achilles kills him and drags his body around the walls of Troy out of spite.

Special properties and use

Hero Hector is unique not only for being a hero unit, but also for his special characteristics. He is one of the strongest heroes available in the game, especially prior to the expansion, and benefits from all relevant technologies researched (e.g. armor and attack bonuses, nobility). However, if the player takes control of him, they will notice he has some unusual traits. This is because Hector can only be tasked to move, and not to do any specific tasks like attacking or boarding a transport. Therefore, if told to do these things, he will just move towards them as if tasked only to move there. Therefore he cannot:

  • Be made to attack Gaia units (although he will fight back if attacked by a lion etc.)
  • Board a transport or raft (nor can a CPU)
  • If diplomacy is set to neutral, he will not be able to attack buildings or villagers etc.

Hero Hector is used in the 'Trojan War' scenario of the ES campaign Glory of Greece - his inability to board a transport was suggested on the AoEH Scenario Design Forum perhaps to have been created so he remained on the island in this level, as one of your goals is to kill him, and if he was to board a transport and attack your island the level would be a little easier, as you would only have to capture the Treasure of Priam (artifact). This is only a theory, though.

The bug can be used to the designers advantage, for example in a puzzle scenario where Hector himself cannot board a transport and must have aid in crossing a river (for example he cannot board a small raft but his friend, a non-mounted unit, can). This could also reflect the character's personality, such as being patriotic and not wanting to leave his homeland, or being an animal lover and unwilling to kill a gazelle.
