Gold
From GenieWiki
Gold is one of four basic resources used in AoE and AoK, along with Food, Wood and Stone. Its basic purpose in both places has been to substitute currency, make swordsmen and higher level or armored units, research some technologies, and to build Wonders.

Age of Empires I
Gold Mine
It can be mined from gold mines:
Each Gold Mine in AoE has a value of 400 pieces.
Trade
It can be traded for one of the other three resources at CPU player Docks using Trade Boats or Merchant Ships
Receiving Gold through trade starts at a minimum of 7 pieces for 20 trading materials. This can go up to a maximum of 75 pieces for 20 trading materials, depending on how far the other player's Dock is.
Multiplayer
In a multiplayer game, someone may tribute it to you.
Age of Empires II
Each Gold Mine in AoK has a value of 800 pieces.
In AoK, however, there are six ways: mining, tribute, ship trade or land trade (using trade carts that travel from a player's market to that of another player) and selling the other resources at the market. A steady flow of gold is also achieved by garrisoning relics into monasteries. Each new relic provides a consistent increase in gold flow.
