Global victory

Global victory is a setting in Age of Empires and Age of Kings which determines what must be achieved for victory by any player. This method of setting victory conditions is very different from using triggers or individual victory conditions to decide the requirements for victory, yet has some similarities and areas of overlap. Global victory and other methods can be used together in a scenario, so neither mode excludes the other. In multiplayer games, conquest and standard victories are the most popular, with conquest being preferred by most players.

Modes

Standard

Win by conquest (see below), by building a Wonder and keeping it standing for 2000 years (about 15 minutes), or holding all artifacts/ruins for 2000 years.

Conquest

Win by completely destroying all other players. Transports, fishing boats, trade boats, walls, artifacts, and ruins do not need to be destroyed. Note that players defeated through the bring object to object/bring object to area/capture object method count as defeated, which can be used to create a trick where a player has a loss condition from bring object to object/bring object to area/capture object but still wins by destroying another object because all other players have an impossible individual victory condition involving that object and bring object to object/bring object to area/capture object, causing them to all be defeated and the remaining player therefore winning.

Score

First player to reach a certain score wins. Almost never used in scenario design.

Time limit

Highest scoring player or team after a designated amount of time. See Time limit.

Custom

Allows the scenario designer to pick between any of the following methods of global victory, or more than one of them:

  • Conquest
  • Exploration - The percent of the map explored
  • Ruins - At least this number of ruins owned
  • Artifacts - At least this number of artifacts owned
  • Discoveries - At least this number of discoveries found

If more than one option is selected, the designer can choose whether all or just one of these conditions must be met. Custom victory is always instant, unlike Standard.
