A garrisoned town center

Garrisoning a unit is a defensive technique available in Age of Empires II.

The word garrison refers to a building guarded by a military group or the group themselves.

Garrisoning in Age of Kings refers to placing a unit inside a building (e.g. tower, castle, town center), a battering ram (only possible in AoC), or even a transport.

This serves as a triple benefit because:

  • The units garrisoned are protected from the enemy (at least until it becomes too damaged to hold them).
  • It also slowly heals the unit(s) inside. In the expansion this healing rate can be increased fourfold by researching Herbal Medicine
  • Garrisoned towers, castles, and town centers holding any villagers or archers benefit from any units garrisoned, because these units can attack from inside the building. The town center cannot attack unless suitable units are garrisoned in it. For example, a tower holding no villagers only shoots one arrow at a time. However, a tower holding a few villagers or an archer will shoot two arrows.

The Teutons can research Crenellations, which allows garrisoned infantry units to add to the attack of a tower, castle or town center.

It is also possible to garrison units inside of their respective buildings of creation. To do this, set the gather point of a barracks, stable, archery range, monastery, siege workshop, or dock on itself. These buildings cannot attack, and you cannot garrison the units that were in there once ungarrisoned. Up to 10 units can be garrisoned inside of one of these buildings at a time.

5 units can be garrisoned into a tower, 15 into a town center, and 20 to a castle.

Stable units can only garrison in castles (and stables, when first created).

It is not possible to garrison siege weapons in any other building than the Siege Workshop if the gathering point is set to the building when the siege weapon is created.

Any garrisoned object is marked by a small flag of the player's color to indicate its status. These flags are visable to all other players as well.
