Dynamics

A dynamic is often used to create nice tricks in Age of Empires. Most dynamics are hard to make and may not give the desired result. They are used to create things wich normally wouldn't be achieveable without triggers, some designers even see dynamics as AoE's replacement of triggers. Here are some of the most common dynamics:

Burning Gaia Cities

There are 2 ways pf creating burning Gaia cities, either by catapults or by War Elephants/Schyte Chariots.

The Catapult way: The designer puts a some catapults in places where they can not move i.e. on cliffs. Then he puts units wich the player with the catapults has set as enemy between the Gaia buildings. (not moveable either) The catapults will now attack the units, dealing area damage to the gaia building beside. The catapults can later be deleted by putting alligators next to them as alligator won't prevent them from attacking. (in difference to lions) This will require a lot of testing as it might give different results all the time. Andrea Rosa used this in Angkor wat and the Khmer lagacy to create a broken bridge.

The War Ele/Schyte way: Put Schytes or War Elephants next to the buildings, also this time make sure they can't move. They will start fighting and damage nearby buildings, Schytes may be Good for burning houses, while elephants may be used for academies or other big buildings. To delete them you can use a Gaia tower wich will shoot at everything non-gaia. This method does not require as much testing as the first as the results will not differ very much fromn time to time. A nice example of this can be seen in Ingo van Tiel's Budonian tales.

Timed Appearance and Appearance of wounded units

This is used when the designer wants to make units appear after start as reinforcements, an separate army or just a wounded man. To make a timed appearance the player may use an alligator and some tame lions blps could also be used but the lions are often preffered because they don't respond to attacks. Then the player puts in the unit(s) the alligator slices through the Lions and then attack the Gaia unit, the alligator makes a flare next to the gaia unit (as it actually has a missile attack) wich makes it visible to the player. To wounded untis there is another alternative, catapults. The designer puts a catapult, a blp behind the gaia unit and a flag. (often hidden behind a tree) As the rock kills the blp the gaia unit is damaged and it runs towards the flag, as the unit reaches the flags LOS the player get control over it.

Diplomacy switching

This dynamic also makes use of area damage, lets say you want player 3 to declare war on player 2 when player 1 does. there's often an unused area of the map, there you can put a blp for player 1, a scythe for player 2 and anything for player 3, make sure they are all next to each other, as player 1 declares war, the Scythe will attack, damaging the units of player 3 causing him to switch diplomatic stance to enemy too.

Time limit

This is an easy dynamic, more of a victory condition actually. The player puts a group of elephants in the edge of the map and a slinger set to enemy towards the elephants, as individual victory for the player he chooses kill # of war elephants, when all the eles are killed the game is over.
