A civilization (often referred to as a civ) is a specific configuration of attributes applied to a given player (human or computer controlled) that defines their overall theme and abilities. A civilization is usually modelled on a real or fictional civilization, race, or other group, and attempts to portray their individual culture and abilities in its design. Attributes can be either aesthetic (e.g. unique architecture, language) or affecting gameplay (e.g. unique civilization bonuses and technology trees).
