AoK Ages

In Age of Empires II (AoK, Ages are milestone technology advances. Each adge advance unlocks new units, buildings and technologies. Building appearances change, as well.
Each Age in the game reflects a step in European cultural advances during the Middle Ages, following the collapse of Rome and leading toward the Renaissance.

Dark Age
Most games begin with player civs at the Dark Age.
This Age represents the chaotic conditions following the collapse of Rome.
Upon constructing two different types of buildings and accummulating 500 food, the Feudal Age technology can be researched at the town center.
Feudal Age
The Feudal Age represents the rise of strong leaders who were able to stabilize local regions, allowing re-emergent growth in commerce and technology.
Upon constructing two different types of Feudal Age buildings and accumulating 800 food and 200 gold, the Castle Age technology can be researched at the town center.
Castle Age
The Castle Age represents the continued consolidation of local regions into emergent nations. The broader scope of stability allowed continue growth of commerce. Centers of learning (represented by the University and the Monastery) could be supported by the stronger economies, and fueled significant advances in technology.
Upon constructing one Castle or two other Castle Age buildings and accumulating 1000 food and 800 gold, the Imperial Age technology can be researched at the town center.
Imperial Age
The Imperial Age represents the emergence of world power nations, whose globe-spanning empires would set the stage for the Renaissance.
This is the final Age in AoK.
Post Imperial
This is not really a separate Age, but may be selected in the map editor by a custom scenario designer to start a player civ in the Imperial Age with all technologies researched.
