AOE:AI editing
From GenieWiki
AI editing in Age of Empires involves editing various files which govern the rules of computer players. The four files primarily involved are the AI file, the Personality file, the City file (.CTY) and the .PLY file. The latter two files are seldom edited, and are only for advanced designers.
Main article: AOE:AI file
The AI file (.AI) governs the rules of what the computer player builds, trains and researches, the order in which they do this, the priority of each item, and whether or not units and buildings are retrained or rebuilt. AI file editing is acheived through AI Edit or a text editor.
Main article: AOE:PER file
The Personality file (.PER) dictates rules of general computer behavior or personality such as tributes, attack groups, building style etc. Like AI files, Per files may be edited with a simple text editor, or with Martin Sturm's Per Edit program.
Main articles: CTY file, PLY file
CTY files tell the computer how to lay out its buildings, as well as what buildings it may create, while the PLY file describes the general rules of play. The AI, Per and Cty files are embedded in a scenario file, but the Ply file is part of the general game rules, and as such is must be shipped with a scenario or campaign as a game modification, and installed by the downloader.
