AI

AI or artificial intelligence refers to the perceived intelligence exhibited in a computer controlled player (often referred to as CPU player, CP or NPC (non-player character). The process of creating an AI is known as AI scripting, though for games without a scripting language for AI creation (e.g. Age of Empires) this process may simply be known as AI editing. AIs are designed to provide a challenge for a human player in single player games. It is possible for players to create their own AIs as a compliment or substitute for the ones provided with the game.

Scenario design

Being in command of an AI is a key part of scenario design, without which the designer has much less control over the gameplay of their scenario. Besides controlling computer behavior, AIs can also be exploited in tricks and effects not normally possible without their use, such as taunt detection in AoK.

Random maps

AIs are also used for single player random map type games including death match, where they are designed to compete with a human player. Because AIs are often weaker than a human player some choose to play against several AIs at once, while some AIs will use cheating to try to compensate for this.
